Traveling is one of the things I enjoy most, so I knew I wanted to create my film surrounding this topic. When I think of the small, under-appreciated moments that make traveling special, what first comes to my mind is the exciting energy of anticipation leading up to the ultimate departure on a trip. Using this inspiration, I tried to portray this eager exhilaration mixed with the rushed tension of wanting to hurry- all wrapped up into 25 seconds.
Pre-Production:
Departure (script) You are tired of following the exact same routine day after day... You want to get out and see all that the world has to offer, but where do you even start? The world is so wide and vast and full of endless beauties: how could you possibly choose just one to visit, knowing how much you’ll still miss out on? Why not start small… ?
You run downstairs, dust of your old globe, and click on a lamp, surprising yourself with a new and exciting random location
You pack your bags: toss in a passport, sunhat, sunglasses, map, camera- and call it good, marking off the last box on your checklist
You lock your door and don't look back, solidifying your decision to leave
You haul your overstuffed luggage out the door and into your car
You depart on your journey, bidding farewell to the only place you’ve ever called home
You turn up the music and let the open road lead you on your way, excited with the anticipation of what’s to come
Music Video for "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
When I listen to music, especially music with strong imagery, I am always visualizing the words in my head as they are being sung. Music is so complex and meaningful that it paints scenes in my mind and can portray stories deeper than the literal aspects. For my video project, I chose to reimagine one of my favorite songs, an old classic, "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong, as a short film, because of the powerful descriptors and sensory details. Whenever I hear this song, I feel like I am lying in the grass under a blue sky with the sun shining down on me and I am transported to a different world. I wanted to bring this concept and feeling into a real life series of events, so this is what I came up with!
